Solo & Carla || Garden Wedding - Video Teaser

I have known Carla for a long time, in fact she was a photo assistant with me for a while! So I was very happy and honored that they would ask me to be their photographer!! It was a great wedding. The Storm Clouds threaten to make the day a rainy one, but the in the end the sun came out and made it a great day. My Bud and Wedding Photographer Holly Meyers of Photos from the Heart was my 2nd. It was a nice garden wedding held in Carla's parent's backyard. A couple of big tents, a few close friends made this day truely special.

I have known Katie since she was a child and her parents even longer, so it was a great honor when they asked me to photograph their wedding. The wedding was held at Mount Hope Church. Mount Hope is huge and they did a pretty good job of filling it up;) It is home base for me so I always know it is going to be a great wedding when I shoot there…. lots of light! The reception was held at the popular Lansing Center! It was a hot sticky day out side but nice and cool inside. The Lansing Center is a great location. It is right on the Grand River in Lansing, Michigan. Lots of wonderful places to photograph couples. Love the Gazebo! Enjoy the photographs.

I got a chance tonight to check out the Michigan Princes Riverboat and take my wife on the first Blues Cruise of the year! It was a great night for a paddle boat ride and to sit back and listen to some great Blues by guitarist Greg Nagy and his band. If you have never been on the Blues Cruise you got to go and check it out. The cruise is usually the first Friday of the month. The band usually starts around 8:00 PM and goes most of the night. At 9:00 the boat leaves the dock and crusies the river until 11:00. The admission is only $15! Docking is at 3004 West Main Street, Lansing, MI.

James & April :: Winter Wedding

James & April got engaged over the Christmas break 2009 and married in Januaryv2010. April went to school with my son Matthew, so I was exited when they called me and asked me to do their wedding. There wasn't a lot of time to prepair, but, the wedding was just as beautiful as some weddings I have done that took a year to plan. I love winter weddings! It snowed most of the day so getting to the church was a little tricky, good thing I have all wheel drive. At the end of the day we went "outside" to enjoy some of the winter wildness!!

Readdressing the most important aspect of the photography...the quality. Your quality of work is truly amazing! In both viewing your work and talking with you, it is very obvious that you have a lot of photography experience that leads to jaw dropping and tear inducing photos, albums, and videos. No amount of photography equipment or editing software can make up for lack of experience. So, while others may brag about their cameras and photoshop abilities, it is merely a diversion due to their lack of experience. Your experience is ultimately what leads to amazing photos that will be cherished forever! (Not to say you don't have fancy cameras and great editing abilities, because you do!)

A final note on the cost of photography. I can honestly say that the money we spent on photography...no let me reword that...Marvin Hall's photography, was the best money spent when compared to anything else for the wedding. Better than the flowers, tuxes, dresses, food, etc. For that, we thank you more than any one of our other vendors for your services. You have provided us with photos, albums, and videos that our entire family will cherish forever!

Lauren :: Bridal Portait Session

I love doing Bridal Portrait Sessions! It gives me some time to really do a photo study of the dress! My clients really enjoy the experience. It is kind of like a "dress rehearsal", they get a chance to see how their hair, make-up and accessories look, before the wedding. I met Arash and Concetta at the Lansing Bridal Show last September. What a wonderful couple! From the very beginning we clicked! When Arash booked me for the wedding he said that I might have a problem with Concetta because she didn't like her photo taken. I was shocked because she is gorgeous. Anyway, the first session went extremely well. We had a great time wondering around MSU at night. In fact, it went so well that Concetta called me up and asked when we could do the next session, since she had such a good time during the first one! I am really looking forward to their wedding in November. It will be my first Persian wedding.

Gina & Brendan :: Wedding

It was my pleasure to meet Gina & Brendan through Nicole Dungy from Weddings by Nicole. Gina was an MSU Alumni and was coming back to East Lansing to get married. Unlike a lot of my clients, Gina and I communicated through e-mail and several phone calls. We were able to finally able to sit down and plan out her wedding over coffee, about a month before the wedding.

The wedding took place at St. John's Student Center in East Lansing, a wonderful place with the reception at Kellogg Center in the Lincoln Room. You couldn't have asked for a better the day. Gina and Brendan booked us for the whole day so we were at the hotel bright and early to record the both of them getting ready. Deb Martin and her crew from All Tressed Up provided the light brunch for the girls as well the hair and make up for Gina and her bridesmaids. I love having time to photograph a wedding from beginning to end! I photographed Brendan and the guys getting ready, while my assistant Holly photographed the girls.

From the hotel we went to the Church. St. Johns is a beautiful place to have a wedding with lots of natural lighting and a wonderful sanctuary. Brendan's mother was not able to make the trip to the wedding, but she was able to listen via cell phone held by one of the groomsmen!

After the wedding we were able to take time and tour the MSU campus photographing the bridal party at different locations. My favorite location was the Clock Tower! We spent over an hour and a half photographing.... wonderful.

We finally made it to the Kellogg Center for the reception festivities. The first thing I usually do is photograph the cake which was provided by Jeannie from The Cakery, wow simply wonderful. Gina and Brendan wanted to sit among their friends, so they did not have a traditional "Head Table"! I was able to pull Gina and Brendan away from their guess for about 20 mins to do some photographs of just the two of them high above city. I would have to say, some of the best images I have produced to date!

Here are some photos of the second session I had with Lindsey and David. This time we went out to Michigan State's campus. MSU is a great place to photograph especially in the spring time, flowers are in bloom and everything is alive. The three of us had a great time. Enjoy the photos.

Lauren & Chad :: Engagement Session

I include many opportunities to get together with clients before the "big day", the engagement session is one! I love working with engaged couples, they are so much fun and usually so in love, and it shows. Lauren and Chad are one such couple. They are great looking couple and they were fun to work with. Here are some photos from the two sessions we worked together.

When we started the first session it looked like the weather would not cooperate. It was cloudy and rainy to start, but we still got some great shots. We went to take some photos on the MSU campus and on the way it was raining so hard you could not see! We continued on anyway, and were able to get some nice shots inside some of the buildings and in the doorways. Toward the end of the session the rain stopped the clouds parted and the sun came out, it was beautiful and made for a perfect end of a session!

Barry County Christian Win ACSI Tournament!

The final game came down to a show down with the Barry County Christan Eagles from Hastings, Michigan vs. Skeels Christian from Gladwin, Michigan. It was a great game but the Eagles were just to much for Skeels.

When I am not photographing weddings, portraits, seniors or special events, you can usually find me photographing some high school or college sporting event. I don't usually post sports photos here, so I thought I would give you a glance at my other world of photography. Last weekend I had the privilege to photography the American Christian School International's annual basketball tournament. The game was held here in Lansing, Michigan at the Great Lakes Bible College's Doty Center. The tournament featured six teams from the Central Michigan Region. The tournament started with two games on Friday night and four on Saturday. A lot of great high school basketball and a lot of great photos.

Special thanks to Kristina Ryckman who was my second shooter for this event. She got a lot of great shots, some I have posted here!

Kayte & Colin :: Wedding

Oh yes! A outside wedding in October in Michigan, you gotta be crazy! With Michigan weather you never know what the weather will be like on any given day especially outside, so when I got the call about photographing a wedding in October outside I thought it would we fun. It was fantastic! On the day of the wedding the weather was sunny and 58 degree, you couldn't have asked for a better October Day. Katie & Colin were engaged, photographed and married in just 6 weeks. To put together a wedding of this magnitude in that short of time is nothing short of incredible. Katie and fab wedding coordinator, Nicole Dungey from Weddings by Nicole, put together a fun and elegant wedding in record time. I shot the engagement session, bridal portrait session, rehearsal and the wedding in less than 4 days!!

To make sure that I had all my bases covered I brought along two assistants for this wedding. The wedding was held in Veteran's Memorial Park in Holt, Michigan. It is a beautiful location. The wedding was staged in front of the fountain. By having three photographers we able to cover the wedding from different and interesting angles.

The reception was held at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing, Michigan on the campus of MSU. This is a very nice facility. The Cake, decorations and food were wonderful and everyone had a great time.

Kudos to my two assistants on this shoot, Ben Friedkin and Margarett Hehr good stuff.

Kayte & Colin :: Engagement Session

Because the couple was pressed for time this was a quick session. Even though it was quick we have a great time. Katie and Colin were a great couple to work with. Colin proposed to Katie and the next day I get a call that they need a photographer and the wedding is in six weeks! Kudos to Katie for putting it all together so quickly. Lacey & Eric :: Wedding

I think I have known Eric for most of his life. He and my son were on the same team when they were about 10 or 11 years old, my how time flies. Eric and Lacey make a fine couple, they are just fun to be around! Their wedding, which was held at Mount Hope Church , Lansing, was a major bringing together of two really large families. When we did the "family" photos of Lacey's side we had to bring them up in two sets because together there was not enough room on the stage... that's big. The wedding was fantastic, which made getting photos easy!

I had the privilege to fly out to Del Mar, CA to photograph a wedding. The wedding was held outside at Seagrove Park, over looking the Pacific Ocean. Fantastic view. Tyler the groom comes from Scottish roots so it seemed fitting that all the groomsmen wore kilts. I must say, the guys looked great. I had to do the wedding with out the aid of one of my regular assistants, so I enlisted the help of groomsman's' sister Jody. Thanks Jody! She got to be my lighting person and even got a chance to take few photos during the ceremony. A real long day and a lot of hard work, but it paid off and we got some fantastic photographs.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - Musical

It was my pleasure to attend the Musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" put on by the Holt/Dimondal Community Players. It was a GREAT show. They had a fairly large talented cast of all ages with a wonderful live stage band. Even though it was a "local" production, the singing and acting was first rate! My buddy Rick has invited me a few times now, but this was the first time I didn't have a conflict. I was glad I was able to go! Here are a few photos I took that night. Not to bad for shooting back in the cheap seats.

Joel & Joanna - Wedding

As most of you can tell I love photographing weddings! It is especially rewarding to photograph people you have worked with over the years. I have photographed the Klepal family in one way shape or form for over 7 years. I photograph Joel's sister Jessica's wedding a couple years ago. Now it is his turn.

The beginning of the day the weather did not look like it was going to cooperate! They set the chairs up in the rain and it looked like I might have get my rain gear on, but about an hour before the wedding the sun came out dried up the rain. What looked like a rained soaked gloomy day, turned out to be almost perfect.

Every summer our family rents a cottage on Gun Lake, which is located not to far from Hastings Michigan. I think we have been doing this for about 14 or 15 years now. We all love it. It is a good place to unwind and forget about the cares of life, at lease for a week. I always bring one of my cameras to photograph all the fun we are having. Over the last few years I have been able to have my laptop with me. I take photos of all our friends and family up their and at the end of the week burn each family to take home with them. I love taking the photos, they love seeing them a great combination. Here are just a few of the hundreds I took. Enjoy!

Jacob - Street Shots

I love taking photos on the street. I grabbed Jacob and went to East Lansing and did some shooting. We went out just before dusk, when the lighting is the best! Shooting on a busy street can be distracting with a lot of people walking buy, this session was no different. We attracted a group of girls who seem to fall in love with Jacob, yelling "we love you!" After watching our session from a far, they went up to the top of the parking garage and continued watching. Jacob took it in stride, (actually I think he rather liked the attention!) We got some great photos and had a good time!

Joel & Joanna - Engagement

This has been an on going project since last winter. I love it when we have a little time to work. You couldn't have asked for a better day for the 1st session we did last winter. Sunny day, blue sky and fresh fallen snow. The shoot was a lot of fun. Joel and Joanna were great to work with. We were able to get three session in. The first session was at a little park that I had never been to that the Joel and Joanna recommended, the 2nd location was in the gardens out at Michigan State and the 3rd and last location was downtown in Lansing, around the Lansing Center. Looking forward to their wedding coming up. It is an out side wedding, Love outdoor weddings, heck, I love inside weddings :-) !

Jacob amd Dawn - Post Wedding

This was one of those sessions I have been wanting to do for a long time. I have known Jacob every since he was in high school and I have come to get know Dawn recently. I helped a mutual friend of ours do their wedding a few months back. Every since then I have wanted to get them in the studio to just have fun. They are getting ready to pull up roots here in Lansing and moving to Tennessee in a couple months so I had to get them in soon. I glad we did.

This was a collaborative session with Kelly, my assistant. Kelly worked on posing and Stephanie and I worked on photographing. Once again we were at my favorite home away from home Persepctive2, in studio B. Kudos to Lynn and her team for all their help. They have a lot of cool stuff for us to try out, like garganuan mirrors and this really cool stain glass door, and the best part is, all this stuff is on site so I don't have bring it with me sweet :-) !

The Mating Game

Last weekend some friends invited me to see the musical that they were in. The production was The Mating Game - A musical Revue. The show was put on by the Lansing Community College Humanities & Performing Arts and held in the wonderful Dart Auditorium in downtown Lansing, Michigan. The production was outstanding! Great music and great vocals. The production also featured a kickin' live stage band.

Dan & Carla - Wedding

December 29, 2007 I had the privilege of photographing Dan and Carla's wedding at Mount Hope Church, here in Lansing, Michigan. I have known Carla for a few years and have gotten to know Dan recently. They make a great couple! It was a small wedding by today's "mega" weddings standards, but a very warm and loving wedding with close family & friends. From the photographs you can see Carla is a lot of fun and Dan is very lucky Guy!

The Ladies Rock!

From time to time I will go and rent studio space at Perspective2 and have some friends come out and have a fun time of learning and experimentation without worrying about being "under the gun". Recently, Kelly Botwinski my assistant and Stephanie Hawn our intern joined me. During this session I just sat back and watched while Kelly and Stephanie created. Both Kelly and Stephanie took turns behind the camera while the rest of us directed. They both did an outstanding job. Our recently engaged subjects Eric and Lacey had a great time and they loved the photos. I think you will too!

Mario & Tracie Engagement Session II

If the wedding is booked far enough in advance, we try and take in the different seasons of the year. In their first session we did some summer locations, in this installment we did fall. Once all the sessions are completed the photos are combined with music to tell of the couple's special love story!

Tad and Alysha - Engagement Photos

Whew! I have been so busy the last few months I haven't had a chance to post. Here are some photos from a session I did back in December with Tad and Alysha. We started out the session by going to one of my favorite places to photograph, a place called the Classic Diner. As you can see it is restruant that takes you back to the 50's. It was a slow night for the diner so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. The waitress even gave us free pop to use in our photo! Once we were done photographing inside we went outside for a few night photos. It was freezing cold but you couldn't tell it.

After the diner we made several visits along the way before ending up at the Lansing Mall. Since it was December the mall was all decked out for the holidays. On the east end of the mall was a big Christmas tree which made for a great background for last of our photos. A lot of photography in a very short amount of time, and as you can see from the photos we had a great time!

Jeremy & Jacque's Wedding

We had a heck of a good time with Jeremy and Jacque. They booked us for the whole day so we were able to spend a lot of time going all over St. Johns, Michigan getting some fun shots. The wedding party was great to work with. We took them to some outside locations in their wedding attire - without coats! I think the temp was somewhere around 28 degrees! You couldn't tell it from the smiles on there faces.

At one point we stopped traffic on the main street in the middle of town to do some POWER walking and JUMPING it was awesome! From there, to the Alibi Bar for a few photo ops. After we finished at the Alibi Jeremy want us to go out and pose in front of some combines! I must say, I have photographed wedding parties just about everywhere, but this was my first combine shoot. Those things are huge!

Finally on to the reception! Food, Folks and Fun a great ending to a wonderful day. Thanks Jeremy & Jacque for sharing your day with us!

On this day it had threaten to rain all day but we really wanted to get session in because it was the one time the whole family would be together. The rain did hold off long enough for me to get some nice photographs. This photo is one of them.

I photographed Josh and Amber five days before their wedding. The photos from this session were combined with photos from another session we did two months prior for a video slide presentation that was viewed before and after their wedding! We got some great shots! By the time we got to the end of the session it was cold and rainy, but you couldn't tell it by their smiles!

Jenine - Bridal Portrait

Often times when I create a photograph the viewer never knows what was really going on just outside the frame. Thus is the case with this photograph. This one of my favorite places to take photos, Cooley Gardens. I like going there because usually it is a very peaceful park with few visitors to get in the way of my photographing. This was not the case that day. Shortly after I arrive to scope out a location about 60 kids for a local high school showed up to have photos taken of them in the formal attire... it was the location for their pre prom photos! By time my bride arrived the place was literally crawling with people, kids, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters... you get the picture. There was even another bridal party that had stopped by to grab a few photos. We patiently waited for a break in that action. I finally asked if the crowd standing in front of the steps could give us a few minutes so we could take our photos. You can't tell it from the photo, but just to the right and left just outside the frame there about 30 or so people standing. I had to time my photo so I did not catch the many people wandering around in the background. I took about 10 or 15 frames at this location and them moved on. I think this is one of the best of the lot and I love it in B&W! A beautiful bride in a peaceful park!

Studio A
Last Tuesday I finally got a chance to try out Lansing's new creative studio space, Perspective 2 Studios. I have a basement studio which is use a great deal, but I can only photograph up to 2 or 3 people comfortably, enter P2. This place is huge! You get your choice of two studios either the 1100 sq/ft Studio A or the smaller 750 sq/ft. Studio B. Both studios have gorgeous oak floors. Studio A has as the natural real brick wall, Studio B white plaster. We had a great time. The staff at P2 was friendly and 1st rate and took great care of us!

The session I had was with a contemporary gospel group the Thuston Family. It was a group of eight so the extra room really came in handy. Professional lighting is included in the price of the rental, plus the have a plethora of studio gear that you can rent at reasonable prices. I especially liked the Pocket Wizard II wireless remote... I'm going have to buy a set of those!!

I have to give Kudos to the P2 folks, thanks for making our session one of the most enjoyable ones I've had in awhile. If you ever have a need for a "bigger" studio space, or are looking for a place to be your home base, check out P2, you won't be disappointed! Check out their web site under my favorites links

Details, Details, Details!

Each wedding we photograph has little things that go into it to make it special and unique. The wedding cake, the bride's bouquet, the table decorations, etc. Kelly Botwinski, my assistant has a great eye for details like this. All of the above photos were taken by her. It is the details of each wedding that we strive to capture to help record that "special day".

I love outdoor weddings! This was wedding was held at the Opry House in Grand Ledge. A great place to work. The day was perfect. Carla Hernandez was my assistant for the day and we had a good time. Food, Folks & Fun!

Paintball!!!

Dave, my youngest son plays semi-pro paintball. He hooked up with a some guys for a paintball tournament at Excalibur Paintball in Battle Creek. Here are a few photos from that outing. Photographing paintball can be a challenge! You have to shoot with your mask on, making it real hard to see the viewfinder. At any moment you and your camera could get bombarded with paint balls traveling at 300 feet per second. I can't tell you how sticky a camera can get after taking a direct hit, not to mention the pain you can receive when one of the balls hits you in a tender spot! ~M

Dance, Dance, Dance!

My oldest son Matthew is in the Momentum Dance Company. Here are a few photos from their latest recital. Matt is the handsom guy in the black hat! It was hard to get good stuff at this location. I had to crank the ISO up to 1600 and shoot with my 135 f2.0, a little movement but not that bad.

Mario and Tracie were a fantastic couple to work with, very photogenic with a lot of energy. We shot most of these photos around the Lansing Center. Great place to explore!

Mark & Laura's Wedding

Marv, nothing less than I expected. Laura and Mark shared wedding photos with us over Thai food shortly after leaving your appointment this past Saturday. Needless to say they were very good, or I would say exceptional. Both Laura and Mark were very pleased. You and your assistant were right on the ball. A photographer is always big part of any wedding. This was made extra special maybe because we were work partners and better yet still considered friends. I do not think they could have asked for anything more. Thanks for sharing your expertise and making ourdaughters dreams come true.

Derek and I really enjoyed working with Marvin. A few months before our wedding we did our engagement pictures with Marvin. That served as a great way to get to know him-and we were so pleased with the pictures that it only made us more excited for our wedding. Marvin and his assistant were excellent at our wedding. I got lots of compliments from friends and family about how they were in not your face and intrusive like many wedding photographers can be.Yet they still got amazing pictures! My favorite part about our wedding pictures are the candids shots. Marvin did an EXCELLENT job of capturing those once in a lifetime moments and expressions. When I look at the pictures I am able to remember what I was feeling and you can see the happiness and joy on our faces and in our body language. The pictures truly captured the essence of our personalities and relationship.
